The Institute for the Impact of Faith in Life hosted an online panel discussion bringing together a multi-faith group of healthcare professionals to talk about their personal experience providing health or social care as someone of faith. The discussion covered several topics including the impact of their faith on their work and the different roles faith plays in the fields of health and social care.

We were joined by Dr Rachel Buckingham (consultant paediatric orthopaedic surgeon), Dr Hozefa Ebrahim (consultant in anaesthesia and critical care medicine), and Dr Uma Gordon (consultant gynaecologist and subspecialist in reproductive medicine & surgery). The discussion was moderated by Dr Solomon Osagie, a leading lawyer and qualified neuroscientist.

Dr Solomon Osagie

Moderator

Dr Solomon Osagie is a a leading lawyer and General Counsel at a UK bank. Sol is also a qualified neuroscientist and a fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health and active member of the Elim Pentecostal Church, being a member of the men’s primary leadership team at Kensington Temple. Sol will be moderating the discussion.

Dr Rachel Buckingham

Dr Rachel Buckingham is a consultant paediatric orthopaedic surgeon at Oxford University Hospitals Trust who volunteers for Mercy Ships. Mercy Ships is an international charity that organises hospital ships to provide free surgeries to women, men and children across sub-Saharan Africa.

Dr Hozefa Ebrahim

Dr Hozefa Ebrahim is a consultant with over 20 years of experience in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. Early in his career, Hozefa served in the British Army, where he developed a deep sense of resilience, discipline, and service – principles that continue to inform his practice. A strong personal faith underpins Hozefa’s approach to leadership, clinical medicine, family life, and mediation. After holding a senior NHS management role, he moved into private practices, and is also a qualified medical mediator.

Dr Uma Gordon

Panellist

Dr Uma Gordon is a consultant gynaecologist and sub-specialist in reproductive medicine and surgery. Uma has more than 25 years of experience in her field. She heads IVF services in Bristol and holds various leadership roles including in the British Fertility Society, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin.
