IIFL convenes high-level discussion of British Muslims’ experiences with expert panel

IIFL hosted an online panel discussion to explore in depth our latest report, 'Belonging, Belief and Britishness,' on the evening of 28th May.

The Institute for the Impact of Faith in Life (IIFL) convened a discussion with a distinguished panel titled ‘Unpacking the British Muslim experience’ on Wednesday 28th May. The dialogue was organised to discuss the Institute’s latest report, ‘Belonging, Belief & Britishness.’ This report has previously been covered in The Times and Eastern Eye, and its findings have been cited in The Guardian and The Telegraph.

The panellists were Charlotte Littlewood, Director of Research at IIFL, Rania Mohiuddin-Agir, Research Associate at IIFL, Fiyaz Mughal OBE, founder of Faith Matters and TellMAMA, and Haras Rafiq, CEO of Pink Llama Films.

During the discussion, Haras Rafiq said:

“The overwhelming majority of Muslims in [Britain] feel this is the best place for them to practice their faith. The fact that there is a separation of church and state, that there is a rule of law that is applied to people across the board – this is the kind of society that Muslims want to live in.”

Rania Mohiuddin-Agir, the report’s author, said:

“Our statistics show that [Muslims] feel comfortable and welcome in the UK. However [British Muslim interview participants] said they felt marginalised in the workplace, that their ideas don’t matter as much, and it was a problem to bring up specific adjustments they might require, like access to prayer spaces.”
